restaurant reviews

Our third outing for restaurant week. Another great bargain, 2 for $40.

We had one appetizer to share so we agreed on the burnt ends. I love burnt ends but was a bit disappointed in these. Don’t get me wrong, the flavor was great, I just expect more of the crunchy end when I get burnt ends. There was certainly more than enough as an appetizer for 2, I think it would have satisfied 4 as an appetizer.

We each chose the 3 meat platter for our main course, 3 meat choices of 3 oz each (or 1/4 rack of ribs). Both of us chose brisket and chicken, while I doubled up on the brisket, P had the pulled pork. The brisket was very good, the smokiness was not overdone, the rub was excellent and the meat was very moist. The rub on the chicken was also very good. I was not very happy with my chicken as I was given all dark meat while P had all white. They should have made it so that we had some of each to be fair. I do not care for dark chicken or turkey much so I am sure I would have enjoyed it more if I had at least some white meat. P said the pork was also very tasty and moist. They had the usual nondescript boring piece of white bread under the meat. Their sauce was also very good, sweet but not overly so, a little spicy but even P had no trouble with the heat level. For sides, I chose the mac-n-cheese and french fries. The french fries were okay, they were not very crispy but they were also not greasy and definitely tasted of potato. The mac-n-cheese was not good, it was a lot like a boxed version with jalapeño thrown in. P had the beans which she said were quite spicy. I forgot to note the other side that P chose.

The shared dessert that we chose was the apple crisp. This was a large portion as well. It was topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. The crisp was indeed crisp, a perfect level of cinnamon but a bit too sweet for my tastes. The apples were very thinly sliced and cooked through without being mushy.

The ice tea was okay, freshly brewed black tea but with a slight hint of funkiness (sorry, I do not know any other description of this flavor that happens to some teas by over-brewing or equipment not thoroughly cleaned).

The service was excellent, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu.

I would return.

I can’t remember my other side either. Oh! Dirty rice and it was excellent!
